The Mountain View Community Visioning Process was the first step in the city's effort to update its General Plan. In March 2008, the City of Mountain View embarked on a city-wide process to actively engage the community and key stakeholders in helping to envision the city's future through the year 2030. Through an extensive outreach effort, residents were given the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions of the city's assets, challenges, values, and vision for the future.
Two community workshops were held as part of the visioning process. The first workshop took place on June 7, 2008. Approximately 225 community members participated. Following a brief presentation of current conditions and future trends, participants engaged in lively, small group discussions about Mountain View's assets, challenges, hopes for the future, and areas of potential change throughout the city. The results of the meeting were synthesized to begin defining the vision statement and guiding principles and to identify potential focus areas within the community.
A second workshop was held on August 23, 2008. Over 200 community members attended a presentation that included a draft community vision statement and planning principles, a series of potential focus areas, and imagery to illustrate the range of possibilities for the character of future development. Participants also engaged in an interactive exercise during which small groups discussed and selected desired land uses and development characteristics and then shared their preferences with the larger group.
The visioning report is a synthesis and reflection of the community's input and feedback received from participants in the community process. The document serves as a starting point for the City's General Plan Update and provides future guidance for future policy and planning decisions related to land use, housing, economic development, sustainability, and community services and facilities, along with other related planning efforts in the city.
